Cha Cha: the First Six Weeks

Here’s 2 day old Cha Cha, the day she came home (4/24/2015).  What a sweet little red puff she was! She is seen below, front, with Tuppence and Violet behind.
Developed in Rhode Island and Massacchusetts in the 1840’s, the Rhode Island Red is one of the oldest know breeds of chicken.  Bred to withstand the harsh New England winters, they are very hardy and good egg producers.

We chose a Rhode Island Red because they are known to be productive brown egg layers that seldom go broody, are easily handled, and have that beautiful red color (even as a newly-hatched chick).

Cha Cha was always very calm and easily picked up and handled.  At 2 weeks old, after just a few pets, she would fall asleep in my hand.

From the beginning, I just loved her little red beak!

At 3-/2 to 4 weeks old, Cha Cha remained one of the tiniest of the chicks.  She loved snuggling underneath either Violet or Rock Ann’s wings.

At 5 weeks, Cha Cha began her growth spurt.

By six weeks old, Cha Cha has continued a rapid growth pattern.  She also has lost a bit of her shyness.  She has definitely stepped up and become a very active little pullet.  I can’t wait to see her as a full-grown hen!
